When a loved one is no longer able to make his or her own healthcare or financial decisions because of a medical or similar condition, the court can appoint a family member, a close friend, or even a trusted professional to make those decisions in the best interests of that loved one. However, the process called a "protective proceeding" is often costly and stressful for families and friends to undergo.
